Postmark vs SendGrid

Postmark vs SendGrid

Postmark and SendGrid both deliver application email, but with different philosophies. SendGrid is a broad platform that serves everything from password resets to large marketing programs. Postmark is deliberately narrow: it was built for transactional email, and it protects that focus with strict policies about what its customers may send.

At a glance

  • Postmark is best for products where transactional email must arrive quickly and reliably. It has a free developer tier of 100 emails a month, and paid plans from $15 a month for 10,000 emails.
  • SendGrid is best for companies that want one vendor for transactional and marketing email, with advanced account features. Email API plans start at $19.95 a month, after a 60-day trial.

Where Postmark is strong

Postmark's main promise is fast, dependable delivery of transactional mail. It supports that with message streams, which separate transactional messages from broadcasts at the infrastructure level. Your password resets do not share sending reputation with your newsletter.

Plans are simple. Basic starts at $15 a month for 10,000 emails. Pro starts at $16.50 and Platform at $18, each with more users, servers and streams. All paid plans include 45 days of message activity, far longer than most competitors, and that makes support investigations much easier.

Postmark is selective about its customers. It vets new accounts and does not allow cold outreach or purchased lists. The benefit to legitimate senders is a cleaner shared IP pool. Dedicated IPs are available from $50 a month, but only for senders on Pro or above with at least 300,000 emails a month, which reflects an honest view of when a dedicated IP actually helps.

A DMARC monitoring add-on is available from $14 a month per domain.

Where SendGrid is strong

SendGrid offers more breadth. The same account can run the Email API and Marketing Campaigns, with a visual editor and automation for the marketing team. The Pro plan, from $89.95 a month, includes a dedicated IP, subuser management, single sign-on and email validation credits.

SendGrid scales to extremely high volumes and is the default integration in a great deal of software. If you need features such as subusers for multi-tenant sending or IP pools you manage yourself, it gives you more to work with.

Key differences

  • Focus. Postmark specializes in transactional email. SendGrid covers transactional and marketing at any scale.
  • Stream separation. Postmark separates transactional and broadcast mail by design. In SendGrid you build that separation yourself with subusers, IP pools or subdomains.
  • Message history. Postmark keeps 45 days by default. SendGrid keeps 3 to 7 days unless you buy more.
  • Dedicated IPs. SendGrid includes one from Pro. Postmark restricts them to high-volume senders.
  • Acceptable use. Postmark is stricter about what may be sent.

Deliverability notes

Shared pool quality is the biggest practical difference for small and mid-sized senders. Postmark's vetting keeps its pools unusually clean, which is why it has a strong reputation for inbox placement on transactional mail.

SendGrid's shared pools serve a far larger and more varied customer base. Results are generally good, but more variable, and senders who care about consistency often move to a dedicated IP on the Pro plan.

If you use SendGrid for both mail types, separate them. Send transactional and marketing mail from different subdomains, and ideally different IPs, so that a complaint spike on a campaign cannot delay a login email.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Postmark if transactional email is critical to your product and you want it handled with as little configuration as possible.
  • Choose SendGrid if you need marketing campaigns, subusers, or very high volume under one contract.
